Damn it I love big windows when it comes to photography. You can do so much with so little. You don’t necessarily need much else. You just play with the Sun. You’re in, you’re out; wham-bam, thank you, Ma’am…Easy.

I don’t really go for architectural photography, but the way the light hit one face of the building and completely shadowed another looked amazing. The light split the frame perfectly, giving a sharp geometric quality to the scene.

I love pictures that make you go “WTF?,” in either a positive or negative sense. It’s much better than the inmemorable “Meh.”

Shooting film is bloody expensive!

I intended to shoot this series purely on black and white film to get the right look and mood. The beautiful grain was an analog quality I wanted to produce naturally in the photographic process, without the use of Photoshop. Especially when it came to producing future silver gelatin prints. But wow. After paying for developing/scanning a couple rolls at a professional photo lab, Photoshop versions don’t seem like such a bad compromise. HA!

Hi, I’m Alphi, and I’m here to make things hawkward.

I don’t know what it is, but amidst all the pretty things out there that make us feel good and warm inside, I also really enjoy photos that have an uncomfortable tension. For a while now I’ve been meaning to shoot weird stuff like this. I couldn’t explain why I wanted to until I actually shot it. Eventually I came to the realization that I want people to see that weird/awkward is also beautiful in its unique way.

I freak’n love magenta!

I’ve done digital doodles over my photos before but never really thought about posting them. I really like how this one turned out though. It adds a completely different visual dimension to a plain black and white photo. Definitely have to start experimenting with this process.

Unlike in street photography, I haven’t narrowed down into a particular photography style when it comes to portraits. It’s as if every photoshoot is completely different from every other one and thus should be treated with a completely different vision. I am however always enamored with what @voguemagazine shoots. (And really a lot of what @juergenteller, @terryrichardsonstudio, and #helmutnewton shoots)

I want to develop an avant grade fashion style of shooting, amongst all the other stuff I shoot. That’s why I need fashion/fashion design friends here in LA. Working between the different disciplines of photography complements skills you learn in each shooting style. Candid street shooting helps you find the best moments with in a portrait. And then the composed nature of portraits complement how you frame a shot on the streets. I really think I can develop a particular fashion style so long as I keep get the opportunity to shoot it.

So, if anybody is in fashion, or knows somebody who wants to shoot some looks, let me know!

Sometimes I myself don’t know how I get to my shots haha.

Shit just happens, and I so happen to be a knucklehead with a camera. It’s basically pure luck that I get a shot. I bet that some days the universe gets really lazy and so doesn’t make me work for my shot. The universe is like, “Fuck it, dude. Here’s a freebie, bro. I’m going home.”

That’s what happened here. I come up out of the subway escalator, and right to my 2 o’clock is this man standing still, as if waiting for me….Freak’n luck, man :)

I believe one characteristic of a “good” photographer is one whose photographs reflect a piece of their personality.

Their photographs will show you what the photographer deliberately included, or omitted, in the frame. It’s a visual commentary on what the photographer cares about…What expression did the photographer choose to portray from his/her model? Does the composition suggest subtext? Is that seemingly minute detail actually a significant nuance? Is retouching emphasized i.e. perfect skin? Or do imperfections take precedence?

A photographer may not even consider all those questions as they take the photo. But that’s what I’m implying of those good photographers. They do less thinking and more “feeling” the photograph. They just take the photo because it feels right. It’s a mental reflex. And this mental reflex is inherit to that individual photographer, hence why their personality is in that photograph.

It’s definitely a plus when your subject can do all these cool tricks. You really get to experiment with different positions and compositions. It’s a refreshing change from the basic static portrait.

That’s where I see I can improve my portraits. To add that little extra, that “je ne sais quoi.” I see that I need to always have that certain something to set it apart from other portraits, whether they be my own work or someone else’s.

One drawback of showing your photos on IG is how small the viewing medium is.

Photographs with small, but important, details are often overlooked. It’s unfortunate sometimes. Like masterful paintings, the photographs that force you to study them for an extended period of time, requiring you to explore the little nuances, are some of the most captivating.

Remember that photo you dismissed a long time ago because it wasn’t good enough? Well, looking at it now, it’s actually not that bad.

…This is actually an intriguing and important notion that I’ve learned a long time ago when I first started learning design: distance creates a different perspective. How you feel about your work right now may not be the same feeling a day, a month, or a year later. Being able to detach from your work and revisit it later gives you a more objective opinion, as opposed to the emotional bias you had when you initially created the work.

Who else feels the same way with their process?
